WIGAN ST PATS 54-12 THORNHILL TROJANS

Thornhill Trojans made the trip to Wigan with the mission to bury the memory of the previous week’s poor showing against Skirlaugh.

However, exactly the opposite happened with Thornhill’s intentions crumbling at the hands of the unbeaten table topping Wigan St. Patrick’s team. The good form of the Wigan team was exaggerated by one of the worst displays, if not the worst, from a Thornhill team since they joined the Premier Division.

Not only did the Thornhill team lack any aggression or direction when going forward, but there appeared to be a lack of ideas when defending their own try line. Wigan’s nine try haul was made to look more spectacular by the way in which they ran with apparent ease through a Thornhill defence which was within 20 meters of its own try line.

Trailing by 26-6, the sending off of Broady did nothing to help an already massive task.

The dismissal of Thornhill’s captain Anthony Broadhead on 51 minutes only served to emphasis the gulf between the two teams. The dismissal of Broadhead ended this game as a meaningful contest as the Wigan team cut loose to turn the screw and increase Thornhill’s humiliation.

Thornhill’s man of the match went to Richard Pachniuk with the way he desperately tried to create opportunities for the visitors. Rob Copley was another shining star in the defeat and managed to make a few dangerous breaks for the Trojans. Copley’s centre Jason Firth also stood firm despite the all-round poor team performance.

The game started with Thornhill looking lively and the visitors came close to scoring on their first raid of the try line. Scott Dyson put forward a kick close to the try line and Jason Firth pounced but failed to control the ball.

But from this point the nightmare unfolded for Thornhill and the Wigan team took the game by the scruff of the neck.

A long pass put to the wing saw the Wigan team make good ground. The ball was switched inside and kept alive due to some good support play. Anthony Atherton backed up the raid perfectly to take the final pass and go over for a try. Ian Schofield converted.

It was from a scrum down situation that the Wigan team then opened up the Trojans to score their second try. From the scrum down Anthony Atherton sold a glorious dummy to create an opening. Atherton then danced around two would be Thornhill defenders before crossing for a try. Ian Schofield converted.

But then Thornhill showed signs that they were capable of making an impression on the run of play and hit back with a try of their own. Some simple straight forward hard running took Thornhill towards the try line. Then Liam Morley broke away and gave out a pass which sent Scott Woodcock charging over for a try. Craig Holmes converted.

But the good work of Morley and Woodcock was quickly undone when Thornhill made a poor attempt to defend their own try line. Pete Fairhurst ran at an angle and sliced through the Thornhill defence. The Thornhill defence failed to react and move in on him and Fairhurst went over for a try which Ian Schofield converted.

St Pats Richard Owen continued the exceptional form he showed mid week on International duty.

Just before half time Thornhill were penalised for a high tackle and Ian Schofield kicked a goal to see the home side lead 20-6.

Any hopes Thornhill had of a second half revival were quickly extinguished when a kick forward on the last tackled wasn’t cleared. The ball was allowed to bounce and Andy Parker collected to go over for a try. Ian Schofield converted.

A bad day at the office for Thornhill then took a further turn for the worst when Anthony Broadhead was shown the red card for head butting. With a man down it was simply an exercise in damage limitation for the Trojans.
Straight after the sending off some confident play took Wigan towards the try line. A kick along the ground was pounced upon by Sean O’Neil for an unconverted try in the corner.
Brimming with confidence the Wigan team once again pressed for the try line. Some fine passing along the attacking line ended when Sean Selby made the most of a missed tackle to go over for a try which Schofield converted.

Further Wigan pressure saw the Thornhill defence back on their own try line. The ball was offloaded on the line and Richard Owen burrowed his way over for the four points. Schofield converted.

The tries were now coming with regularity as Thornhill desperately wanted to hear the full time whistle to end the misery. A kick forward was pounced on by Alan Reddecliffe as the Wigan side scored another try. Schofield converted.

Another up field break was complemented with some good support play. Sean O’Neill completed the attack with Wigan’s ninth and final try which Ian Schofield converted.
Right at the death Danny Lee ran onto a pass from Richard Pachniuk to charge over for a try for Thornhill between the posts. But by now the damage had been done. Craig Holmes converted.

At full time coaches Paul March and Brett Ferres called for an immediate inquest and kept the Thornhill players out on the field as they outlined their intentions to ring the changes for next weeks home game against West Bowling.
