Anthony Broadhead quickly tapped the penalty
to catch West Hull asleep and nipped over for a close range try. Liam Morley
converted.
Any thoughts of an end of season stroll in the
park were quickly banished from the minds of Thornhill players when West
Hull swiftly replied with a try of their own. A high kick to the corner
caught Thornhill out. Lee Craig read the kick perfectly and out jumped
everyone to collect the ball and touch down for an unconverted try in the
corner.
The action then switched to the other end of
the field when Liam Morley sent out a wonderfully weighted pass which found
Thomas Marsden on the wing. Marsden took the ball cleanly and went over for
an unconverted try in the corner.
The pattern of end to end play continued when
substitute Glen Donkin scored for West Hull. From a penalty situation the
giant forward surged for the try line and despite a number of Thornhill
tacklers clambering over him, he managed to ground the ball and score an
unconverted try.
Then came the try of the match and it was
arguably one of the best Thornhill have scored all season. Matthew Roberts
made the initial break from Thornhill’s half of the field. Roberts found
Shane Davies and he went romping towards the try line. Johnny Campbell had
supported the break perfectly and was right on Shane Davies shoulder to take
the final pass. On receipt of the ball Campbell sprinted away to score a try
between the posts to complete an exhibition in fine support play. Liam
Morley converted.
But as Thornhill players were still
complementing each other after a fine score West Hull combined well to score
their last try of the game. With play out to the wing a kick was put forward
into the in goal area. Liam Boswell pounced to score the try and Mark Hewitt
converted.
It was in the second half that Thornhill
really cut loose and took advantage of some repositioning of players by West
Hull in order to cover for injuries. As the half wore on Thornhill seemed to
break the West Hull defence down with monotonous regularity and it was only
the referee and some never say die tackling from West Hull that prevented
this turning into a drubbing.
A fine break from Wayne Wilson was the first
real threat to West Hull of the half. However, it was Shane Davies that
provided the killer touch when his off load found Johnny Campbell 20 meters
out from the try line. Campbell went on a weaving run towards the line and
over for a score. Liam Morley converted. |
