THORNHILL TROJANS 22-29 WEST BOWLING

Thornhill Trojans recent run of poor form continued with this disappointing showing in Overthorpe Park. West Bowling arrived in Thornhill as the only Premier Division team without a point to their name, having suffered six straight defeats. However, some poor defending and a lack of discipline from the Trojans paved the way to the Bradford team’s first win of the campaign.

The Trojans did at one stage of this game look capable of sneaking a close victory and took a 16-14 lead early in the second half. However, the sinbinning of Scott Dyson for dissent triggered Thornhill’s downfall, as they self destructed on the wrong end of a lop sided penalty count.

Man of the match Chris Walker made his mark with a dazzling two try performance. Walker had been recalled to the side as part of a shake up by Coach Paul March. Walker grabbed his opportunity with both hands and looked extremely dangerous on the left wing.

Walker’s play was assisted with some good centre play from Jason Firth, who used some shrewd passing to create runs for Walker.

Another stand out player for Thornhill was Richard Pachniuk who tried valiantly to make things happen in the middle of the field. Unfortunately Pachniuk’s endeavour often lacked the support play it deserved as he fought a sometimes loan crusade.

The game started in the best possible way for Thornhill when they scored a try inside the games opening minute. It was a pass from Scott Dyson which prized the West Bowling defence open. George Mack took the pass from Dyson and raced over for an unconverted try.

But then Thornhill’s apparent reluctance to defend their own try line again became exposed, as it had several times at Wigan St.Patrick's in the previous game. West Bowling made some speculative drives to the Trojans line. Eventually the Thornhill defence was caught napping, as it failed to move up quickly. Aide Leek seized the moment and nipped over for a try which Lee Innes converted.

This try was followed by another example of Thornhill being slow off their own try line. Scrum half Steven Illingworth sold a wonderful dummy and the Thornhill defensive line parted. Illingworth strode through the gap and went over for a try and Lee Innes converted.
In the run up to half time Thornhill started a revival following a reshuffle to accommodate all four of their substitutes. Straight from these substitutions Thornhill scored a try.
The ball was worked at speed along the attacking line and Jason Firth put Chris Walker away down the wing. Walker had pace to burn and squeezed over for a try. Craig Holmes converted.

In the run up to half time Thornhill were penalised for passing after the referee had call held. Lee Innes kicked the penalty goal to see the visitors lead 10-14 at the interval.

Thornhill got just the start they wanted to the second half when straight from a scrum down in their own half of the field Jason Firth put Chris Walker away on a glorious run. Walker set off at pace on a run which took him over half the length of the field and over for a try Craig Holmes converted to put Thornhill in front.

However, from this point some poor tackling and indiscipline resulted in the game sliding away from the Trojans. Lee Innes levelled the score with a penalty goal after Thornhill had been penalised for dumping.

Despite a 2 try effort from Chris Walker the Trojans never got on top of the game.

But then a bizarre try followed for West Bowling. A scrum down took place right on the half way line. Bowling had head and feed and the ball came out of the scrum to stand off Gareth Cullington.

Cullington initially appeared to hesitate with the ball and Thornhill called for crossing.

However, the Thornhill pack failed to break quick enough as Cullington accelerated away from the scrum in a straight line. The referee waved play on as Cullington cut Thornhill a stranded Thornhill defence and sped half the length of the field in a straight line. Cullington cantered between the posts for a try which Lee Innes converted.

Thornhill were then penalised for holding down in the tackle and Scott Dyson objected to this decision too much in the referee’s opinion. Dyson was shown the yellow card as the referee asserted his authority on the game.

It was from another scrum down situation that Thornhill were caught asleep defensively. From the scrum Thornhill opened up to seemingly gift Trevor Stead a Try. Lee Innes converted.

To compound Thornhill’s misery Aide Leek slotted over a drop goal to make West Bowling’s first league victory of the season almost certain.

A late flurry from Thornhill resulted in a try for Matthew Roberts which Craig Holmes converted. But this could little to disguise what had been a bitterly disappointing performance from the Trojans.
