EASTMOOR DRAGONS 12-46 THORNHILL TROJANS

Thornhill quickly buried the memory of their poor showing against Castleford Panthers on the opening day of the season with this fantastic victory.

Under the floodlights of Eastmoor, Thornhill turned of the style to blow their hosts away in the second half to register a comfortable nine try victory. Trailing 10-12 at the interval the Trojans showed no mercy after the interval and left the Dragons desperate for the full time whistle to go.

The architects of the merciless victory were the trio of Scott Dyson, Matthew Roberts and Richard Pachniuk. Dyson took the official man of the match award as result of some impressive go forward running which kept Thornhill moving forward, particularly during the tight first half.

However, there was some fine centre play from Matthew Roberts whose ability to slip the ball out of the tackle to keep play alive caused the Dragons no end of problems. Richard Pachniuk also caused Eastmoor countless headaches which his shrewd passing to create openings from nothing situations.

Thornhill Trojans Mr reliable Craig Holmes chipped in with a try and 5 goals.

The opening forty minutes gave no indication of the final landslide victory for the Trojans. In fact Eastmoor looked a tight unit and all set to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Eastmoor opened the scoring inside the games opening ten minutes with a well taken try. The hosts worked the ball up field and made use of some good support play. When the line came within striking distance a kick was put along the ground and into the in goal area. Full back Michael Brown read the situation perfectly and pounced on the ball to score a try. Leigh Joyce converted.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Thornhill recovered from this early set back to score a try of their own. Strong running from Shane Davies and Scott Woodcock made good ground for the Trojans before Matthew Roberts got the ball out to winger Rob Copley. Copley took the pass and crossed for an unconverted try.

Further pressure from Thornhill going down the slope resulted in the visitors taking the lead. Some quick thinking straight from a penalty situation saw Thornhill heading for the try line. With Scott Woodcock held just short, there was a quick play the ball and Scott Redgwick nipped over for a try which Craig Holmes converted.

Eastmoor’s cause was weakened when Christopher Hayward was sin binned for persistent foul play. During this sin binning period Eastmoor stayed resolute and the nearest Thornhill came to scoring was when Shane Davies was held up over the try line.

Right on the stroke of half time Eastmoor took the lead as a result of some good team play. Play was worked up field and some weak defending from Thornhill gifted Eastmoor field position. Peter Ratcliffe then made a dive for the try line, and despite appeals for a double movement from Thornhill, the try was awarded and Leigh Joyce converted.

Trailing by two points, with both the light and temperature dropping, playing up the slope, it took real guts for Thornhill to take the game by the scruff of the neck like they did in the second half. The Trojans second half performance was more than just impressive – it was devastating and Eastmoor were the unfortunate victims.

Quick hands from Thornhill saw the ball travel along the attacking line until it reached James Craven. Craven demonstrated great strength to hold off his defenders and force his way over for a try. Craig Holmes converted.

The ever improving Wayne Hartley raced 80 metres for a late try.

The trick of quickly passing the ball along the attacking line, once again over stretched the Eastmoor defence. The final pass from Matthew Roberts sent Rob Copley stepping over for his second try of the game. The conversion was wide.

Another fine passing move saw Thornhill make good ground towards the try line. It was once again a final pass from Matthew Roberts that produced the killer blow. This time Anthony Broadhead was on hand to take the pass and power over for a try which Craig Holmes converted.

Some more skilful handling resulted in a try when Jason Firth put Craig Holmes over for an unconverted score in the corner.
There was then a wonderful attacking move from Thornhill which saw them make several attempted raids at the try line. The move finally broke down when James Craven knocked on over the try line.

But this mishap was soon over looked when substitute Liam Green broke from Thornhill’s half of the field. Green beat a host of Eastmoor defenders before crossing for an unconverted try.

Just to prove that this just wasn’t Eastmoor’s night Wayne Hartley intercepted a pass and raced 80 meters up the slope to score a try which Craig Holmes converted.

The final try of the evening was created by Richard Pachniuk when his pass found Scott Redgwick right on the halfway line. Redgwick sprinted down the wing before taking play in field to score the try. Craig Holmes converted to complete a fantastic victory for Thornhill Trojans on their travels.
