Thornhill Trojans are from
Dewsbury and were formed in 1967. Originally the club
was known as the gate inn, taking their name from the
pub from which they were based. In 1988 the name was
changed to Thornhill gate and then a year later
Thornhill lees juniors were approached with a view to
combining and forming one strong club in the area.
After a meeting at
Thornhill WMC both clubs agreed to drop the “gate” and
“lees”, joining forces to become one club known simply
as Thornhill A.R.L.F.C (the Trojans banner was added in
the summer of 1999). The Open Age section of the club as
always played in Overthorpe Park. Despite the club’s
long existence it was only in late 2000 that they moved
into their own premises.
The clubs headquarters in
Overthorpe park is Thornhill sports and community centre
which the club built after being awarded a major grant
by both Sport England and Kirklees Council.
Playing as the gate inn
the club enjoyed success In the regional competitions
but it was a run in the Yorkshire cup which took them to
the semi final and the selection of Tony Allerton for
BARLA GB side that made the club realise what potential
it had.
Over time a number of
players returned to the side from the professional ranks
notably Rob Hoyle, Chris Haigh, Phil Bates plus the
addition of Steve Naylor.
After another appearance
in the Yorkshire cup semis, and after sweeping all
before them in the local cups, the decision was made to
apply to the Conference League.
Thornhill joined the NCL
in the summer of 1994 and gained promotion from division
two at the first attempt. This debut season saw them
defeat Northampton knights 100-0 and reach the 3rd
of the RL Challenge Cup to Play Hull Kingston Rovers at
Craven Park.
They reached the semi
final of the national cup only to lose to west hull. The
following three seasons were trying to gain promotion to
the premier division. In December 1995 Thornhill reached
the Yorkshire Cup final but victory went to Skirlaugh at
a packed ram stadium. T
his was followed by a trip
to Gigg lane, burry, to take on swinton lions in the 3rd
round of the RL cup. The season ended with Julian Yarrow
and Sean Senior Begin called up to play for BARLA GB.
The goal of achieving premier status was eventually
reached with promotion as runners up in 1997/98.
